Why should I visit Mbarara?
Mbarara is the highest developed district in Western Uganda and holds as the capital for the region being the region´s commercial district and also holding the biggest offices in the region with regional headquarters of all offices.
The district therefore attracts a wide range of tourists both locally from the region, from central region in districts of Kampala ,wakiso, and Mukono which has proved the district as one of the highest visited district second Fort Portal in the Western region

1.Igogo Cultural Centre.
THE IGONGO CULTURAL CENTRE AND Museum is on the former palace ground of the local Ankole king, located in Mbarara District in western Uganda. The museum is the largest exhibits center in Western Uganda.
The museum has a vast collection of artifacts, exhibits of the agrarian and pastoral culture, history of political changes as well as present-day modernization of agricultural activities in the region.
The Igongo Cultural Centre and Museum highlight the way of life of the tribes in southwestern Uganda, including the cattle herding tribe, Bahima, and how adaptable the region has been to new technologies and life. The tribe has collaborated with the University of Basel, Switzerland, on cheese making and milk pasteurization, which the museum has documented extensively as a success story of new technologies from Europe reaching Uganda.
The museum is part of the Cultural Centre, which encompasses a state-of-the-art hotel with conference facilities. Day trips from the Centre include visits to the Biharwe Eclipse monument in Mbarara, honey farms, as well as evening entertainment and meetings with the Bahima tribespeople.
The museum staff can arrange bespoke events that include afternoon sessions with the local tribespeople in eshawbwe-making from ghee/clarified butter made from Ankole cow milk, and millet bread-making. Other activities include trips to the local Ankole cow farm for a hands-on milking experience. The Centre has two restaurants that serve local, authentic Bahima and Ugandan food.

2. Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is a very special place; every part of it is alive with variety, interest and colour. It contains an extensive area of wetland and also harbours several species of mammals and birds found nowhere else in Uganda. Its sculptured landscape, with rolling hills and idyllic lake shores has a varied mosaic of habitats; forest galleries, seasonal and permanent swamps, rich acacia-woodland and grassy valleys which all support a wealth of wildlife.
At 370 square km, Lake Mburo National Park is small in comparison with many other East African parks, but with its rich variety of habitats; dry hillsides, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannah, forest, lakes and swamps, it is home to a surprising diversity of plants and animals.

4. Kitagata Hot Springs
The Kitagata Hot springs is found in a sub-county called Kitagata in Sheema district located in Ankole in the western region of Uganda. The area got its name from the popular Kitagata hot springs. The word Kitagata is a Runyankole word meaning “warm” and it became famous for this place because of the presence of this very hot water that comes out of the earth’s crust to the surface after being heated up as a result of vulcanicity. The place is known by the residents of the area as “Ekitagata Kyamarembo” and has stories associated with it that are believed to have happened in the past.
Kitagata hot springs is visited daily by crowds of people from different areas of Uganda and beyond Uganda. The water of the hot springs is warm and is believed to heal skin diseases and muscle pains and even complicated diseases inside the body. Because of the healing powers of this water, you will find crowds of people around the area, others half naked relaxing on the stones around the place and others in the warm water. Kitagata hot springs has two zones; the one for women and children and the one for men.
