He later joined NTV Uganda, where he worked as a news anchor and talk-show host. His interviews with political leaders and public officials helped him become familiar to television audiences.
In May 2019, he announced his departure from NTV after spending approximately 13 years in the media industry. He explained that he wanted to move beyond reporting on the country’s challenges and become directly involved in addressing them. His decision marked a significant turning point from journalism to active politics.
Joel Ssenyonyi and the People Power Movement
After leaving television, Ssenyonyi joined the People Power movement led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and became its spokesperson in 2019. The movement attracted Ugandans concerned about governance, political accountability and the country’s future, particularly young people.
When People Power evolved into the National Unity Platform, Ssenyonyi continued serving as the party’s spokesperson. His media experience gave him familiarity with public communication, interviews and political messaging, skills that became important in his new role.
Joel Ssenyonyi as Member of Parliament
In the 2021 general elections, Ssenyonyi won the Nakawa West parliamentary seat. His election marked his transition from communicating political issues as a journalist to participating directly in Parliament.
During the 11th Parliament, he chaired the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), which examines the operations and accountability of government bodies and public enterprises. The role placed him in a position to scrutinise public institutions and raise questions about how public resources are managed.
Leading Uganda’s Opposition
In December 2023, Ssenyonyi was appointed Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, succeeding Mathias Mpuuga. He assumed the role in January 2024, becoming one of the leading figures responsible for presenting the opposition’s position on government policies and scrutinising the work of the executive.
His responsibilities include coordinating opposition members, raising concerns about public expenditure and service delivery, and holding government accountable through parliamentary debate. In 2025, he also retained his position as NUP spokesperson following a vote by party delegates. His leadership places him at the centre of Uganda’s parliamentary debates over governance and public accountability.
Inside His Family Life

Ssenyonyi married Febress Nagawa in June 2020 at Watoto Church North in Kampala. Their wedding attracted public attention because he had previously spoken openly about his decision to abstain from sex until marriage. The couple have two children, a daughter and a son, although they generally keep their children’s private lives away from the political spotlight.

Ssenyonyi has spoken publicly about the importance of his Christian faith in shaping his personal decisions. In a 2020 interview, he described how his relationship with his wife developed through friendship and serving in church. He also spoke about discipline, fidelity and patience as important values in marriage.
His public comments about faith and personal responsibility have formed part of his identity beyond journalism and politics.
His Vision for Uganda
Ssenyonyi has repeatedly highlighted corruption, poor service delivery and injustice as issues that require attention in Uganda. In 2025, after graduating with his master’s degree, he emphasised the need to make corruption more difficult and ensure that public officials face consequences for misusing public resources. His academic research also focused on the relationship between corruption and service delivery.
From television journalism to parliamentary leadership, Ssenyonyi’s career has increasingly centred on public accountability. As Leader of the Opposition, his political record will continue to be shaped by how he uses his position to scrutinise government, represent his constituents and contribute to national debates.
